Think you’re the only one that gets dry itchy skin?

Snow might be pretty, but the cold weather isn’t so friendly to your skin. We’re not the only ones who suffer though. Our dogs get dry skin too! And, they need your help to soothe their dry, itchy skin and spots. After all, they can’t just slap on some lotion! Luckily, there are a few simple ways to help keep your dog’s skin feeling good all year long.

Cold winter weather and low humidity can cause your skin to become dry, flaky and uncomfortable. The same thing can happen to your dog’s skin, too. Just as you may take extra steps to keep your skin healthy when the weather turns cool, your pets skin and coat may need a little extra care as well.

Wash ’em less often

Your dog may require more baths in the spring and summer, but it’s best to cut back on bath time during winter months.

Soaps and shampoos strip skin of its natural oils and can dry it out, causing flaky, itchy skin. Often, this can lead to dandruff which can be uncomfortable for your pet… just like for us!

If you must bathe your dog, try a simple water bath or use a shampoo for sensitive skin. If your dog’s skin is irritated, try an oatmeal bath or moisturizing shampoo.

Keep your dog trimmed

Using a soft brush on your dog’s coat will remove dead skin cells, improve  circulation and stimulate hair follicles to release natural oils. Daily brushing will also keep it looking good and prevent knots and matting from developing.

If your dog has long hair, keep his fur trimmed to minimize the accumulation of ice, salt and deicing chemicals, which can irritate skin.

Healthy Diet

If your dog’s skin is easily irritated during winter, talk to me NOW about the amazing benefits of feeding your pets natural, fresh and baked PetWants food! If you haven’t tried our food with your pet, they will love the food, the taste and you will enjoy the results! Some of the favorite blends are the Chicken and Brown RiceLamb and Brown Rice, just to name two of the many!

Stay Hydrated

Your dog burns more energy trying to stay warm during winter, so it’s easy to become dehydrated. Make sure you pet’s water dish is always full, and if it’s kept outside, use a plastic water bowl so that when the temperature drops, your pet’s tongue doesn’t stick to the dish.

Spot Treat Hot Spots

For stubborn dry and super itchy spots, you probably need something a little more. These spots are know as hot spots because they usually feel warm to the touch. Pet Wants Skin Spray  and Pet Wants Healing Salve are both incredible for easily treating these hot spots and give some relief to that driving irritating itch!
